Egg cases of skates

Mermaid’s purses are the empty egg cases of skates. We usually find them as black “packets”, with four horn-like corners. Skates are related to sharks and attach their eggs to kelp and other seaweeds. When the little skate hatchling leaves its case, the buoyant mermaid’s purse is easily washed up onto the beach.
