Backwash

A backwash or undertow is created when water is sucked back to the sea in channels cut into the sloping foreshore. The water can flow very fast and powerfully, almost like a river. It is impossible to swim against these undertows, which sometimes occur along the Jæren coast at places such as Hellestø and Ogna.
